Carter Charles Calvin Howard was born March 3, 1923 in Grand Junction, Iowa. He was the son of Virgil and Celene Williams Howard.

When Carter was in the sixth grade, he and his family moved to Paton. Carter graduated from Paton High School.

He entered the United States Navy in 1942, and was honorably discharged in 1945. He returned to Paton, and was married April 15, 1947 to Lillian Mayme Rathouz at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Moorland, Iowa.

Carter and Lillian made their home on the farm at Paton. They lived there until 1980 when they moved into Paton.

Carter had been a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, and was a member of the V.F.W.

Carter and Lillian wintered in Texas for nearly 30 years. He enjoyed golfing.

Carter Howard died Saturday December 20, 2003 at the Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson. He was 80 years of age.

Preceding him in death were his parents, and one sister, Helen Cramer.

Surviving is his wife, Lillian; his brother and sister-in-law Dale and Fabian Howard of Hiawassee, Georgia; nieces and nephews.
