Lance Corporal Benjamin Robert Carman, 20, of Jefferson,
Iowa died April 6, 2004. He was born to Nelson and Marie Carman
on February 9, 1984, in Jefferson, Iowa. Ben graduated from Jefferson-Scranton
High School in 2002. He was active in football, golf, V.I.C.A, the
Assembly of God church, and his other interests included hunting,
fishing, trapping, camping, and volunteering at the skating rink.
Ben enlisted in the Marines delayed entry program
his senior year of high school. He left for basic training on September
9, 2002. Ben graduated from Marine Corps Recruit Depot basic training
in San Diego, California, on December 6, 2002. He then attended
the School of Infantry at Camp Pendleton, California and graduated
on March 11, 2003. Ben was assigned to the U.S.S. Essex aircraft
carrier in the Okinawa, Japan area. He returned to Camp Pendleton
on June 13, 2003, and underwent further training in heavy weapons
and survival. Ben was deployed to Kuwait on February 16, 2004. On
March 10 he left Kuwait for Iraq where he was later killed by hostile
fire on April 6, 2004.
He is survived by his parents Nelson and Marie
Carman of Jefferson; brother James of Jefferson; sister Catherine
Wilson, her husband Brian, children Caden and Sadie of Churdan;
sister Amelia of Jefferson; grandmother Adabelle Carman of Jefferson;
aunts and uncles Gayle and Doug Clark of Dallas City, IL; Deb and
Jim Nelson of Jefferson; Adrienne and Rich Smith of Jefferson; Doug
and Karen Carman of Jefferson; Tom and Mary Hyde of Clear Lake;
and Ann and Mark Moyer of Brashear, MO; great-aunt Alice Nipps of
Jefferson; 13 cousins, and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by paternal grandfather
Robert Carman, maternal grandfather Earl Hyde, maternal grandmother
Beverly Hyde, and uncle Dan Hyde.
