Funeral services for Frank Gilmore, 93, long-time Cooper area
farmer, will be 2:00pm Thursday at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home
in Jefferson. Interment will be at Franklin Twp. Cemetery, Cooper,
IA.
Friends may call at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson
between 9:00am – 9:00pm Wednesday. (There is no special
family visitation)
Frank Marion Gilmore was born on a farm south of Jamaica, Iowa
on September 29, 1910. He was the son of Ottie Ira Gilmore and
Fannie E. Lamp Gilmore.
Frank lived in this area and attended country school until 1920
when he moved to Cooper, Iowa. He graduated from Franklin Township
School in 1928, and helped his father farm for the next several
years.
On October 24, 1935, Frank was married to Marjorie Jackson. The
couple lived in Cooper for 4 ½ months, then lived the next
8 years at a farm home 1 mile west and ¼ mile north of
Cooper. In 1943 Frank and Marjorie bought the farm ½ mile
west of Cooper, where they lived and farmed. They had a Brown
Swiss dairy herd for 29 years. Frank retired from dairy farming
in 1964, and retired from crop farming in 1972.
Frank served on the local school boards for 24 years: 13 years
at Cooper, and 11 years at Jefferson Community Schools. He was
a member of the Iowa Brown Swiss Cattle Association and served
as secretary for 3 years.
He enjoyed fishing, camping, and traveling. He took three trips
to South Africa, Alaska and Hawaii. He also traveled to Nova Scotia,
England, and Europe. He traveled to both coasts of the United
States, visiting every state except South Carolina. He wintered
in Texas from 1972 – 1998.
Frank was a long time member of the Cooper United Methodist Church.
He died August 1, 2004 at the Panora Nursing and Rehab Center.
He was 93 years of age.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a baby daughter,
Mary Louise Gilmore. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Gilmore
of Panora; 3 daughters: Judy Johnson and her husband John, and
Janet Adamson and her husband Jim, all of Panora; and Martha Klinzman-Brooks
and her husband Peter Brooks of Johannesburg, South Africa; a
sister, Lucille Norgren and her husband Hugo of Rippey; 3 grandchildren:
Chris Klinzman, Bonnie Talik, and Jim Johnson; 1 great-grandson,
Kyler Talik, other relatives and friends.
