Gertrude Nelson
Funeral services for Gertrude Nelson, 99, of Jefferson
will be at 10:00am on Tuesday April 20, 2004 at St. Joseph Catholic
Church, Jefferson. Interment will be at the Calvary Cemetery, Stuart,
Iowa.
Public visitation will start at noon on Monday
April 19, 2004 at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson. A
rosary will be held Monday afternoon at 3:00pm at the funeral home.
Survivors include several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Gertrude Catherine Martes Nelson was born April
25, 1904 at Exira, Iowa. She was the daughter of Nick and Hattie
(Janssen) Martes.
The family moved to Stuart, Iowa in 1918. Gertrude
taught school in Adair County and Guthrie County.
On October 12, 1936, Gertrude was united in marriage
to Dr. Leo C. Nelson. They lived in Des Moines one year, and in
Bronson, Michigan for one year, before moving to Jefferson, Iowa
in 1938. Dr. Nelson was the chief surgeon in the Greene County Hospital.
He died in 1969.
Gertrude was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church,
Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and St. Joseph’s Guild.
She also belonged to the Greene County Medical Center Auxiliary,
and various bridge clubs.
On April 13, 2004, Gertrude Nelson died at the
Greene County Medical Center. She was 99 years of age. She was preceded
in death by her parents; her husband; and one brother. Gertrude
is survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
