Funeral
services for James G. Graven will be at 11:00 am on Tuesday July
13, 2004 at the First United Methodist Church, Jefferson, Iowa.
Interment will be in Franklin Township Cemetery,
Cooper, Iowa.
Public visitation will start after 8:00 am on
Monday at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson.
Visitation with the family will be from 6:00-8:00pm
Monday evening at the funeral home.
James Gordon Graven, son of Raymond and Ella Knapper
Graven, was born on February 20, 1923 in Jefferson,
Iowa. He was united in marriage to Lois Lawton
on September 1, 1946 at the First United Methodist
Church in Jefferson, Iowa.
Jim was engaged in farming all his life. He
received the Greene County Outstanding Young Farmer
Award in 1956 and his farm qualified for the “Century
Farm Award” in 1987. Jim was a ten year
member of the Greene County School Board, served
as President of the Greene County Cattleman’s
Association, and was a Greene County Advisor for
the “Children & Families of Iowa”
organization of Des Moines, Iowa. His other memberships
included Lions Club, Morning Star Masonic Lodge
#159 and the Eastern Star, Greene County Farm
Bureau and the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine. Jim was active
in the First United Methodist Church in Jefferson,
and had served as a Trustee and member of the
Administrative Board for many years.
James G. Graven died July 9 2004 at Iowa Methodist
Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. He was 81
years of age. Preceding him in death were
his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Lois of Jefferson;
two sons, Randall Graven and fiancée Judi
Butterfield and Dennis Graven, all of Jefferson:
daughter Sherrinell Graven-Childs and her husband,
Glenn of Jefferson; five grandchildren, Bonnie
Childs Matthews, Julie Childs, Brandon Childs,
Jacki Campbell, Shannon Stephenson, and two great-grandsons,
Jacob and Jonathan Stephenson.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Jefferson,
Jefferson Public Library and Greene County Historical Society.
