Funeral services for Kenneth Johnston, 89, of Dawson, Iowa will
be held at 2:00pm Monday, June 14, 2004 at First United Methodist
Church, Grand Junction, Iowa.
Visitation after 2:00pm, Sunday at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home
in Grand Junction. Visitation with the family from 6:00 -8:00pm
Sunday at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Grand Junction.
Kenneth Albert Johnston, son of Raymond and Mary Mae Lieger Johnston,
was born on November 24, 1914 in Coon Rapids, Iowa. He grew up
and attended school in Coon Rapids and Dale City areas.
Kenneth worked as a farmhand in the Coon Rapids area. During
the Depression, he worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps and
worked on many projects in the state of Iowa. He was employed
as a lineman for the REA in Jefferson and worked in many Iowa
locations.
On October 18, 1938, Kenneth was united in marriage to Gertrude
“Toots” Shain in Carroll, Iowa. The married couple
farmed for Fern Christian near Scranton, Iowa. Ken and Tootie
farmed for themselves south of Ralston until 1965. In 1965, Ken
and Tootie moved to Dawson, Iowa. From 1965-1996, the couple ran
Ken and Toots Tavern in Dawson.
Kenneth was a member of the Dawson Fire Department, Dawson Town
Council and he drove school bus for the Perry Community Schools
for 17 years.
Kenneth A. Johnston died June 11, 2004 at the Boone County Hospital
at the age of 89 years. Preceding him in death were his parents,
his son, Kenneth Roy Johnston, Sr.; 2 brothers and 3 sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Gertrude “Toots” Johnston,
of Dawson, IA; daughter-in-law, Linda Johnston, of Grand Junction,
IA; sister, Edith Fiedler, of Jefferson, IA; brother, Raymond
Johnston, of Carroll, IA; 5 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren
and 5 great-great grand children.
