Funeral services for Leland “Satch” Purviance, 80,
of Jefferson, will be 11:00am Wednesday at First United Methodist
Church, Jefferson. Interment will take place at a later date at
Panora West Cemetery, Panora, IA.
Friends may call at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson
after 2:00pm Tuesday. The Elks will hold a service at 6:30pm Tuesday
at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home, followed by visitation with
the family until 9:00pm.
Memorials for the family may be left at the funeral home.
Leland Charles “Satch” Purviance, son of Foster and
Sylvia Moyer Purviance, was born on December 19, 1923 in Stuart,
Iowa. He graduated from Panora High School in 1942. He enlisted
in the United States Army Air Corps on December 11, 1942 at Camp
Dodge, Iowa. He served in Iceland during World War II and was
honorably discharged on February 14, 1946.
Leland was united in marriage to Ruth Schoonover on August 1,
1946 in Troy, Kansas. The couple made their home in Panora, then
Guthrie Center, moving to Jefferson in 1969. “Satch”
was a lineman in Guthrie Center and a foreman in Jefferson for
Iowa Electric Light and Power Company, where he was employed for
35 years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of the Guthrie Center
Fire Department for 20 years.
He attended the First United Methodist Church. He belonged to
the American Legion, B.P.O. Elks Lodge #2306, Masonic Lodge, Consistory
and the Za Ga Zig Shrine. He loved to hunt, fish, golf and snowmobile.
“Satch” and Ruth looked forward to their many trips
to Lake Hubert, Minnesota. Since he was a referee for 35 years,
he knew the Green Bay Packers never lost a game at the Purviance
home.
“Satch” Purviance, 80, died at the Greene County
Medical Center in Jefferson on September 25, 2004. Preceding him
in death were his parents, and an infant son, Johnny Lee Purviance.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Purviance, of Jefferson; 2
sons, Rick (Jodi) Purviance of Johnston and Ronn (Joyce) Purviance
of Guthrie Center; one sister, Wanda Gray, of Greenville, SC;
two brothers, Robert (Mildred) Purviance of Panora and Bernard
(Erika) Purviance of Buladean, NC. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren;
5 great-grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.
Memorial contributions may be made in care of the Purviance
family.
