Leland Charles “Satch” Purviance, son of Foster and Sylvia Moyer Purviance, was born on December 19, 1923 in Stuart, Iowa. He graduated from Panora High School in 1942. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps on December 11, 1942 at Camp Dodge, Iowa. He served in Iceland during World War II and was honorably discharged on February 14, 1946.

Leland was united in marriage to Ruth Schoonover on August 1, 1946 in Troy, Kansas. The couple made their home in Panora, then Guthrie Center, moving to Jefferson in 1969. “Satch” was a lineman in Guthrie Center and a foreman in Jefferson for Iowa Electric Light and Power Company, where he was employed for 35 years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of the Guthrie Center Fire Department for 20 years.

He attended the First United Methodist Church. He belonged to the American Legion, B.P.O. Elks Lodge #2306, Masonic Lodge, Consistory and the Za Ga Zig Shrine. He loved to hunt, fish, golf and snowmobile. “Satch” and Ruth looked forward to their many trips to Lake Hubert, Minnesota. Since he was a referee for 35 years, he knew the Green Bay Packers never lost a game at the Purviance home.

“Satch” Purviance, 80, died at the Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson on September 25, 2004. Preceding him in death were his parents, and an infant son, Johnny Lee Purviance.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Purviance, of Jefferson; 2 sons, Rick (Jodi) Purviance of Johnston and Ronn (Joyce) Purviance of Guthrie Center; one sister, Wanda Gray, of Greenville, SC; two brothers, Robert (Mildred) Purviance of Panora and Bernard (Erika) Purviance of Buladean, NC. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.
