Mary Alice Ryan The family will greet friends at St. Joseph Catholic Church beginning at 10:00am Monday, one hour prior to the memorial service.
Mary Alice Ryan was born October 19, 1913 at Appleton, Minnesota. She grew up in Casey, Iowa with her parents Price (Brownie) and Alice Boyd Thompson and her sisters Josephine and Eleanor. After graduating from Casey High School in 1931, Mary Alice entered the Mercy School of Nursing in Des Moines and graduated in 1934. Mary Alice married Emmett (Pat) Ryan in 1938 and they settled in Lake City, Iowa in 1952. They owned Ryan’s Super Valu in Lake City for many years. In 1990, Mary Alice moved to Des Moines and then in 1992 she moved to Jefferson, Iowa. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Mary Alice Ryan died August 13, 2004 at the Greene County Medical Center Long Term Care Unit. She was 90 years of age. Preceding her in death were her parents, and her husband who died in 1965. Survivors include two daughters: Mary Jo Schleisman and husband Jim of Jefferson; and Jane Baldus and husband Bob of Des Moines; two sisters: Josephine Miller of Chesterton, IN and Eleanor Schumacher and her husband Peter of West Des Moines, IA; 8 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Memorials may be sent to Long Term Care at the Greene County Medical Center.
