Mary Lucille (Beeson) Swanson was born November 13, 1912 to Thomas and Stella (Chandler) Beeson in rural Coburg, Iowa, in Montgomery County. Lucille attended one room country school at Round Oak School, Grant Township, Montgomery County, Iowa, and Coburg Consolidated School, graduating in 1930. She attended Red Oak Junior College from 1930 – 1932.

Lucille earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Iowa State Teacher’s College at Cedar Falls in 1939. She taught school in several Iowa communities including Gowrie, Callender, Cedar Valley, Coburg and Kirkman.

On August 14, 1949, Lucille married Carl Harold Swanson in the First Presbyterian Church in Red Oak, Iowa.

Lucille enjoyed memberships in many clubs and organizations. As a young girl, Lucille belonged to 4-H and served as county president. She enjoyed history, and researched her family tree to trace lineage to the Revolutionary War time, and she became a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Lucille’s love of growing flowers and gardening prompted her membership in the Fort Dodge Garden Club. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Paton, Iowa.

Mary Lucille Swanson died April 19, 2004 at Bickford Cottage, Fort Dodge, Iowa. She was 91 years of age. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband Harold who died October 28, 1978; and her brother Byron Beeson who died December 3, 1986.

Survivors include a niece, Barbara (Beeson) Kenney and her husband Bruce of Nevada, IA; a nephew: Alan Thomas Beeson and his wife Cindy of Red Oak, IA; 2 great nieces, 2 great nephews; 2 step-daughters: Irene (Swanson) Christianson and her husband Chuck of Gowrie, IA, and Karen (Swanson) Inman and her husband Ken of Ottawa, IL; 7 step grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
