Funeral services for Mary Yates, 82, of Perry, Iowa and a former
Greene County, Iowa resident will be 10:00am Monday November 1,
2004 at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home Chapel, Jefferson, Iowa.
Interment will be at Greenbrier Township Cemetery, Greene County,
Iowa.
Visitation will be from 2:00am-9:00pm on Sunday at Slininger-Rossow
Funeral Home, Jefferson, with family present from 6:00-8:00pm
Sunday evening at the funeral home.
Mary Virginia Yates, daughter of Fred and Anna Burns Thaler,
was born on April 12, 1922 in Fillmore County, Minnesota. As a
young child she moved to the family farm in Greenbrier Township,
Greene County, Iowa. Mary grew up on the family farm and attended
country school. She graduated from Bayard High School in 1940.
In 1943, Mary graduated from St. Anthony Hospital School of Nursing
in Carroll, Iowa.
Mary was united in marriage to Dewey Yates on September 25, 1943
at Bayard, Iowa. The couple made their home on the farm in Greenbrier
Township for many years.
Mary’s employment experience included private nursing
in Greene and Carroll counties, employment at the Greene County
Medical Center and nursing homes in Bayard and Jefferson.
Mary was a member of the Bayard Church of Christ, Chairman of
the Review Board at the Bayard Care Center for 10 years, Bayard
Library Club, Bayard Library Board and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Mary Yates died on October 29, 2004 at her residence at the
Spring Valley Retirement Community in Perry, Iowa. She was 82
years of age. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband,
Dewey Yates in 1998, one brother, Dean Thaler and one sister,
Grace Seeden.
Survivors include one daughter, Joyce Carstens of Perry, IA;
two sons, Paul Yates of Cokato, MN and Jerry Yates of Dexter,
IA; 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
