Funeral services for Oliver Murphy, 80, of Jefferson, will be
10:00am Tuesday September 7, 2004 at First United Methodist Church,
Jefferson. Interment will be at Wright Cemetery, Greene County.
Friends may call at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson
after 9:00am Monday. The family will be present at the funeral
home to greet friends between 6:00 -9:00pm Monday.
Oliver
Hugh Murphy, 80, passed from this life on Thursday, September
2, 2004 in the presence of his family while at his home in Jefferson,
IA.
Oliver was born the son of John Thomas and Minnie Murphy on March
29, 1924 in Scranton, Iowa. Growing up he attended school in Jefferson.
After the 7th grade he worked as a farm hand and also worked with
his father in his trucking business until 1941 when he started
his own trucking business, Murphy Trucking, at the age of 17.
At the age of 18, he served in the United States Army during World
War II from 1942 to 1945. He served as a technician with the 1st
Convalescent Hospital Unit in the Pacific Battle Theatre. He was
given these decorations and citations: Philippines Liberation
Ribbon with one Bronze Star and a good Conduct Medal. After being
honorably discharged from the Army in 1945, he resumed his trucking
business in Jefferson, IA. On September 15, 1957, Oliver was united
in marriage to Marjorie Mae Kafer in Jefferson, IA…they
are referred by their loving family as “Ma and Pa Murphy”…just
shy two weeks, spending 47 years happily married. Oliver’s
passion for trucking remained throughout his life until age 79,
when in 2003 he retired. Some of his other passions were time
spent with his family, fishing, camping and the “Murphy
River Ranch”.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son Ronald Murphy, grandson
Jeffery Moranville, granddaughter Jessica Whitver, great-granddaughter
Kayla Moranville; sisters, Vergene Friess and Helen Swartz.
Oliver is survived by his wife, Marjorie of Jefferson; children,
Donald (Karen) Murphy of Avoca, Donna (Ed) Lawson of Jefferson,
Francis (Goldie) Murphy of Des Moines, Diana (Ron) Lawson of Boone,
IA, Barb (Dan) Potkonak of Council Bluffs, Bill (Diane) Kafer
of Grand Junction, Tony (Tina) Kafer of Jefferson, Jack (Kim)
Murphy of Jefferson, Julie (Dave) Jones of Jefferson, Jodi (Brian)
Whitver of LeMars, Janice (Marvin) Hakseth of Hastings, MN; 30
grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great granddaughter;
brother, Lee Murphy of Jefferson and many, many other relatives
and special friends.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday, September
6 at Slinger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson where family will
be present to greet friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Services will be
10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 7 at First United Methodist Church
in Jefferson with burial at Wright Cemetery.
