Funeral services for Roma Jean English, 92, of Jefferson, will be 1:00pm Monday at First United Methodist Church, Jefferson. Interment will be at the Jefferson Cemetery. Friends may call at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson after 11am Sunday. The family will be present to greet friends between 2:00 – 4:00pm Sunday.
Roma Jean English was born November 5, 1911 at Yale, Iowa. She was the daughter of Carl Arnold Anderson and Jessie Mae Atkinson Anderson. Roma Jean graduated from Panora High School in 1930, and then attended nursing school in Des Moines. She married Thomas Leo English on January 31, 1934 at Rippey, Iowa. Roma Jean and Leo were the parents of two sons, Carl and Thomas. Roma Jean worked as a nurse’s aid at the Greene County Medical Center for over 20 years. She was a 50-year member of Evening Star Chapter #107 O.E.S. Roma Jean was a member of First United Methodist Church in Jefferson, and belonged to the United Methodist Women. She quilted at church, played Bridge with various clubs, and belonged to Midwinter Club. Roma Jean English died August 20, 2004 at the Greene County Medical Center. She was 92 years of age. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband who died August 18, 1958; two sons: Carl English who died March 10, 2004, and Thomas English who died October 21, 1994; and a sister, Phyllis Wood. Survivors include daughter-in-law Margaret English of Des Moines; daughter-in-law Carolyn English or Rockford, IL; Granddaughters: Carla English-Smith of Arlington, TX; Ann Unger of Kansas City, MO; Kerry English of Kansas City, MO; Holly English of Rockford, IL and a grandson: Matthew English of Rockford, IL; other relatives and friends. The family wants to give special thanks to Roma Jean’s care-givers, including niece Sherri Bates of Scranton and all the staff at the Greene County Medical Center who provided loving, unconditional care.
