Obituary of Velma E. Johnson
Velma Evelyn Johnson was born at Lewis, Iowa, on
December 26, 1909. She was the daughter of Lewis W. Graue and Martha
Gaulke Graue.
Velma lived her early childhood years at Lewis.
The family made several moves in Iowa, and settled near Cooper.
Velma graduated from Cooper High School in 1926.
Velma and her sister, Iva, attended summer school
class at Atlantic, Iowa. They became rural school teachers. Velma
taught at several locations in rural Greene County, Iowa.
On March 6, 1935, Velma was united in marriage
to Lee Johnson at the bride’s parent’s home in Paton,
Iowa. Velma and Lee lived and farmed in Greene County for many years.
Velma had lived on the present farm south of Dana for nearly 65
years.
Velma was a member of Salem United Methodist Church
in Paton. She enjoyed working and serving her church. She belonged
to Eastern Star, and Happy Hour Club. She also enjoyed playing cards
at the senior citizens center in Paton, Iowa.
On January 6, 2004, Velma Johnson passed away
at the Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson. She was 94 years
of age.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband
Lee who died in 1987; a sister, Iva Foy, and a brother, Wilbur Graue.
Surviving is one son, Max Johnson of Dana, IA;
one brother Lyle Graue of Paton, IA, other relatives and friends.
Memorials are suggested to Salem United Methodist Church in Paton,
Iowa.
