Funeral services for Arthur Shearman, 89, of Jefferson, IA will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday May 4, 2005 at Central Christian Church in Jefferson, with interment at the Jefferson Cemetery.

Friends may call at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson after 11:00 a.m. Tuesday. The family will visit with friends from 7:00 – 9:00pm Tuesday at the funeral home.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Shearman; son, Tom Shearman; and one sister, Helen Nelson, all of Jefferson, Iowa; 5 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society

 

Arthur Gregory Shearman was born August 8, 1915 in Jackson Township, Greene County, Iowa, on what was to become the Shearman family century farm. Art was the son of Archibald George Shearman and Genevra Harris Edward Shearman.

Arthur grew up on the family farm and attended rural school, then graduated from Jefferson High School in 1934. The family moved to a farm near Jefferson where Art farmed with his father for some time.

On February 26, 1939, Arthur was united in marriage to Evelyn Stevens at the home of the bride’s grandparents in Jefferson. Art and Evelyn lived their married life in the Jefferson community. Art worked for C.W. Schaal for 15 years. He also trucked and hauled coal and horses. He worked as a set-up and lead man for 15 years at White Consolidated.

Art and Evelyn moved to the family farm in Greenbrier Township in 1946, where he lived until his death. As a child, Art attended Sunday school and was baptized at Central Christian Church in Jefferson. He was an active member of the Central Christian Church all his life. He had been a 4-H leader and was a Charter member of Greene Campers.

Arthur Shearman died May 1, 2005 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa. He was 89 years of age. Preceding him in death were his parents; his son Jim who died in 1991, two sisters: Elizabeth Shearman and Dorothy Nelson; and 1 brother, Harold Shearman.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Shearman, a son Tom Shearman, and a sister, Helen Nelson, all of Jefferson, Iowa; 5 grandchildren: Karen Akerberg, Eric Shearman, Lisa Jacobs, Mark Shearman, Jennifer Mihalovich; 8 great-grandchildren; two nieces: Marilyn Shearman of Jefferson and Nancy Rogers of Scranton; one nephew, Dick Nelson of Milwaukee, WI; other relatives and friends.
