Bernice D. “Bernie” Hurley, 86, of Jefferson, Iowa, formerly of Dubuque, Iowa, died on July 27, 2005 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines, Iowa.

Visitation with the family will be from 2:00-6:00 pm Saturday July 30, 2005, with a Vigil for the Deceased at 4:00 pm, at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home, Jefferson, Iowa.

Visitation in Dubuque, Iowa will be held at Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, from 2:00-6:00 pm Monday August 1, 2005, with a parish scripture wake service at 2:00 pm at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 am on Tuesday August 2, 2005 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. Interment will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery.

 

Bernice D. Hurley, daughter of John and Nellie Miller Henderson, was born on September 24, 1918 in Bushnell, Illinois. Bernice’s parents later moved to Manchester, Iowa, where they farmed. Bernice graduated from Manchester High School. Her employment included the Dubuque Packing Company, Farber’s Bag Factory and Washington Junior High School in Dubuque. Bernice also taught country school for many years.

Bernice married Francis “Frank” Hurley at St. Raphael’s Cathedral in Dubuque, Iowa on June 1, 1946. They were married for 56 years. On March 11, 1947 a daughter Ilene Frances was born and died at birth. On January 15, 1948, a son, Robert Michael was born.

Bernice was a longtime member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Dubuque. In October 2003, she moved to Jefferson, following the death of her husband, Frank. She currently was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jefferson.

Bernice was a loving Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother and will be dearly missed. She enjoyed being with her family and especially enjoyed the time spent with her great-grandson, Logan Higgins. She loved to laugh, crochet, bake and stayed in touch with old friends. While living in Dubuque, she loved taking care of her home and gardening. Her friends and neighbors in Jefferson were special to her.

Preceding Bernice in death were her parents, her husband, Francis “Frank” Hurley; infant daughter, Ilene Frances, brothers, George, Alvin and Guy Henderson and sisters, Ruby Locke and Lena Glass.

Survivors include her son Robert Hurley (Kristie) of Jefferson, IA; grandchildren, Dawn Marie Higgins (Ryan) of Grand Junction, IA; Jodi Lynn Hurley of

Overland Park, KS and Robert “Robbie” Hurley of Osceola, IA and great grandson, Logan Matthew Higgins of Grand Junction, IA; sister, Edith (Harlan) Raus of Manchester, IA. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Bernice’s family would like to extend a special thank-you to Dr. Karber; Father Ries; Greene County Public Health nurses, Jill Juergensen, Beth Rasmussen and Wanda Steberg; Hospice volunteers; Panora Nursing and Rehab Center; Iowa Methodist Medical Center physicians and staff; Ettie and Alvin Knittig; Isabel Godwin; Kathy Cranston; Heather Logsdon; Becky Keeney; Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home; Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Funeral Home and all of Bernice’s friends and close neighbors for their loving care and support, as they were a great comfort to the family.
