Funeral services for Mary Frances Lane, 79, of Jefferson, will be 10:00am Monday September 26, 2005 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jefferson.  Interment will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Friends may call at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson after 8:00am Sunday.  The family will be present to greet friends at the funeral home between 6:00 – 8:00pm Sunday, where there will be a Vigil For The Deceased at 7:00pm Sunday.

 

Mary Frances Lane was born in Webster County, Iowa on March 6, 1926.  She was the daughter of Raymond and Pearl (Cain) George.  Mary graduated from Gilmore City High School in 1943 where she was the president of her class, homecoming queen and valedictorian.

Mary married Norman E. Lane on September 9, 1950.  They became parents of seven children.  Mary taught first grade for 27 years, 21 of them in the Jefferson-Scranton School District.

Mary was a faithful member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Jefferson.  She volunteered as a religious education teacher for over 30 years.  She was also a long-time member of the church’s Peace and Justice Committee.

Mary loved spending time with her family, and caring for them.  She went out of her way to care for people in need.  In 2004 she was honored by Governor Vilsack for her outstanding service to Iowa’s children as a mentor.  She touched the lives of countless people. 

Mary Frances Lane died September 21, 2005 at the Greene County Medical Center.  She was 79 years of age.  Preceding her in death were her parents; a son, Jon Michael Lane, a daughter Mary Jean Elizabeth Lane, and a brother in infancy, Eugene George.

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Norman Lane of Jefferson; a daughter, Mary Jo Lane and her husband Joe Gross of Lake Montezuma, AZ; four sons: Thomas Lane and his wife Kathy of Des Moines, IA; Mark Lane and his wife Marilyn, and David Lane and his wife Rhena, all of Jefferson, IA; Matthew lane and his wife Fiona of Ocala, Fl; eleven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; two brothers: Tom George of Mercer, MO and Paul George of Gilmore City, IA.
