Alice Nipps passed away peacefully Tuesday October 24, 2006 in Jefferson.

Alice was born in Cresco, Iowa on August 9, 1916. Her family moved to Jefferson when she was a child. She was the daughter of James Love Carman and Frances Rowena Smart Carman. Alice graduated from Jefferson High School with the class of 1934, and married William Ross Nipps a year later. They farmed near Cooper, Iowa until Bill’s death in 1970.

In 1958 Alice went into the business world, working in the Auditor’s Office in the Court House. She then went on to partner with Mike Chessler in tire stud manufacturing and continued with other business projects until retirement. After retirement, she began a new adventure as an artist and opened her own art studio – Alpha Studio – in Jefferson.

While sharing her remaining years with Patrick Vincelli, she and Vince journeyed to Mesa, Arizona and resided there during the winter months. She worked with artists there and often brought their work back to her studio, helping to broaden enjoyment of the art in the community.

Alice will be remembered as an energetic and enthusiastic supporter of Jefferson and its artists, as well as an accomplished member of the artistic community.

She is survived by her children, James Nipps and his wife Diana of Sheridan, Wyoming; Mary Hanson Harrison of Des Moines; son-in-law, Bob Helm; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; 7 step-great-grandchildren; one step-great-great-grandchild. In addition, the loving Carman family: sister-in-law Adabelle Carman and the nieces and nephews and their spouses and children.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband, William Ross Nipps; her cherished daughter, Margaret Helm; her partner, Patrick “Vince” Vincelli; and her brothers, Bob and Nelson Carman.

In lieu for flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure of Breast Cancer.
