Eugene Kurth
Visitation will start at 9:00 am Wednesday at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home, with family present from 6:00-8:00 pm. E. Eugene (Gene) Kurth, son of Albert Ernest and Matilda Marie Jacobs Kurth, was born on a farm near Lidderdale, Iowa on July 5, 1923. Gene grew up in the Glidden area, living with his mother or other relatives after the death of his father, when Gene was 11 years old. He was a 1941 graduate of Glidden High School. Gene served in the military during World War II, seeing action in the Battle of the Bulge. He received an honorable discharge in 1946. Gene married Phyllis Jeane Dreher, on May 10, 1948, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. To this union two sons were born, James Ivan and Paul Eugene. Gene was employed by the Chicago Northwestern Railroad for 40 years, retiring in 1983. He lived in Grand Junction, Iowa from 1948-2000. After Phyllis’s death in 1992, he married Marjorie Parr Baker on April 1, 1997 in Bullhead City, Arizona. Gene and Marjorie made their home in Grand Junction until moving to Jefferson, in 2000. Gene enjoyed playing cards with the “ol’ boys” in Grand Junction and he and Marjorie enjoyed dancing to the big bands at Lake Robbins. He was a past member of the Jefferson Elks and a member Jefferson V.F.W. Post #2963 and the Ray Hawbaker American Legion Post #28 in Grand Junction. Gene Kurth passed away February 17, 2006 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. He was 82 years of age. Preceding him in death were his parents, his first wife, Phyllis in 1992; his son, Paul in 1998 and brother, Marvin Kurth. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Kurth of Jefferson; son, James (Joyce) Kurth of Jefferson; daughter-in-law, Jana Kurth of Mankato, MN and 6 grandsons, Cory Kurth of Des Moines, IA; Christopher Kurth of Kansas City, KS; Ben Kurth of Fort Dodge, IA; Tim Kurth of Jefferson, IA; Kyle Kurth and Aaron Kurth, both of Mankato, MN. |
