Funeral services for Janette Nelson, 81, of Story City, formerly of Jefferson, will be 10:30 AM Saturday August 5, 2006, at the First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson. Burial will be in Jefferson Cemetery, Jefferson, IA.

Visitation will start at 2:00 PM Friday at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home, Jefferson, with family present to greet friends from 6:30-8:00 PM Friday evening.

Janette Evelyn (Siver) Nelson, daughter of John and Grace (Kohl) Siver, was born on her parents’ farm in rural Mechanicsville, Iowa on August 30, 1924.  She graduated from Morley High School in 1942, where she was a member of the marching band and played girls’ basketball.  She attended Cedar Rapids Business College and worked as a secretary.  On June 25, 1944, she married Magnus Nelson in St. Louis, Missouri before he left to serve our country in WWII.  They moved to Jefferson in 1948 where Magnus secured a position as Director of Elementary Education.  He died on June 7, 1975.

Janette was active in community and church affairs.  She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for over 50 years and served as church secretary for 16 of those years.  She loved her church.  She was also a member of Chapter CZ-PEO; Ingleside Club; Greene County Hospital Auxiliary, Garden Club and was an avid Iowa State Men’s Basketball fan.  In 2003, Janette moved to Bethany Manor.  She continued to be involved in many social activities during her residence there.  A favorite activity was Bell Choir.

Janette Nelson, 81, died peacefully at Bethany Manor in Story City, Iowa on August 3, 2006.  Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Magnus, and her grandson, Brian.

Janette is survived by one daughter, Carol (Larry) Jahn of Ames, Iowa; two sons, Owen Nelson of Union City, California and Steven Nelson of Vancouver, Washington; one sister, Velma Magnuson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson; Jefferson Public Library or Bethany Manor Chaplaincy Fund.
