Funeral services for Mercedes Hollingshead, 96, of Boone, will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 12, 2006 at Slininger-Rossow Chapel in Jefferson. Interment will be in the Paton Township Cemetery. Friends may call at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson beginning 11:00 a.m. Sunday, where the family will be present to greet friends between 4:30 - 6:30p.m Sunday.

Mercedes Bernadine (Grivey) Hollingshead of Boone, Iowa, formerly of Dana, Iowa, went home to be with the lord on June 7, 2006. Mercedes was the daughter of William and Nora (Vigneron) Grivey. She was born November 9, 1909 in Dana, and attended school in Dana.

On April 14, 1931, Mercedes married Ray Hollingshead. After their marriage, the couple lived on a farm west of Dana, moving near Boxholm in 1933 and then back to a farm near Dana in 1936. In the fall of 1964 they moved into the town of Dana. Ray Hollingshead died in 1974. In October of 1986, Mercedes moved to Boone. In March of 2005 due to health concerns, she moved to the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone.

Mercedes became a member of the Dana Presbyterian Church in 1920, and then transferred to the Paton Presbyterian Church in 1941. She was a member of the Lydia Rebekah Lodge of Dana, transferred to Grand Junction Rebekah Lodge #448 and received a 50-year pin in 1984 and life membership of Past Grand Noble. She liked playing Bingo, cards, and making baby quilts to give to family and friends. She enjoyed watching the birds, gardening, growing flowers and cooking wonderful meals for her family.

Those left to honor the memory of Mercedes, known only as “Grandma” to many, include her daughter Diana Buhr and her husband Frank of Keystone; son-in-law August Staebler of Boone; grandchildren and their spouses: Craig (April) Staebler of Boone, Kathy (Mike) Bice of Woodward, Cindy (Brian) Kimm of Blairstown, LuAnn Hansen (Dave Gasper) of Blairstown, Rodney (Kathy) Buhr of Lake of the Ozarks, MO, Ryan (Amy) Buhr of Newhall, and Randy Buhr (Jess Mangiaracina) of Blairstown.

Also surviving are great-grandchildren: Jessica Staebler (John Venema), Matthew Staebler, Christopher Staebler (Taria Quade), Nicholas Hadaway, Michelle (Jared) Sharr, Scott (Jill) Benesh, Mikael Benesh, Jodie Benesh, Kristin Benesh, Bobby (Amy) Benesh, A.J. (Megan) Benesh, Justin (Trisha) Hansen, Brandy Hansen (Travis Horner), Samantha Hansen, Daniel Gaspher, Bryton and Brody Buhr, Skyler, Spencer, and Shyanna Kimm, and Jarrod Buhr.

Also, step-great-grandchildren: Ann Richards (Wesley Roberts), Andrew Richards, Danielle (Brian) Schertz, Jen Bice, Jami Kimm (Jeff Shellenberger) Jacob Kimm, Robert and Carrie Gasper, Desiree Mangiaracina; great-great-grandchildren: Brandon, Abbigail and Jayce Staebler, Tamera and Zachary Horner, Alexa and Lucas Benesh, Hannah Hansen and Landyn Haack Benesh; step-great-great-grandchildren: Jacob Sonderoth Tigges, Zander and Josie Shellenberger, Allison Schertz; several nieces and nephews, including Colleen (Bill) Esdohr, Dixie (Danny Johnson, Bill (Janice) Hamilton, Jerry Hamilton and their families.

Mercedes Hollingshead was preceded in death by her parents William and Nora Grivey; her husband Ray (February 16, 1974); daughter Marjorie J. Staebler (October 24, 1999); sisters Belva Grivey, Gladys Hawn, Eileen Hamilton, brothers-in-law Wayne Hawn and Raymond (Shorty) Hamilton, brothers Keith and baby Grivey, twin grandsons Danny and David Buhr, great-grandson Angelice Quinten Buhr, and nephew Dewayne Hawn.

Mercedes brightened the lives of her family and friends. And she will be greatly missed by all.
