Funeral services for Walter Shockey, 80, of Jefferson, will be 1:30 pm Saturday April 1, 2006 at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson, with interment at the Jefferson Cemetery. There will be visitation 4:00 – 9:00 pm Friday at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home, Jefferson.

Walter Donald Shockey, son of Elmer Shockey and Ruth “Hattie” Harrison Shockey, was born on February 16, 1926 in Junction Township, Greene County, Iowa. He had no siblings.

Walter became a resident of Woodward State Hospital in 1932. While there, he enjoyed feeding the babies, getting the mail, helping younger children and doing odd jobs. He was a good worker and got along well with others.

In 1955, Walter moved to Cedar Lanes Estates in Greene County. There he worked in the kitchen, did yard work and was a canteen worker. He loved tending to his flowers, dances, playing pool and listening to music, especially country western and polka music. On October 1, 2005, Walter moved from Cedar Lane Estates into the Harrison Home in Jefferson. He liked having his own bedroom and having more opportunities to be involved in the community.

In December 1988, Walter began paid employment with Genesis Development. He enjoyed a variety of jobs while in the work services program. He was also involved in the Employment Services program and Adult Education while at Genesis. He retired on October 31, 1997. He will be remembered as always having a smile on his face.

Walter was very social and delighted in his many friendships. He was involved in the Catholic and the First Assembly of God churches and also relished the opportunities presented by the Kiwanis Club of Jefferson.

Walter Donald Shockey passed away on March 28, 2006 at the Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson. He was 80 years of age. Preceding him in death were his parents.
