Funeral Services for Darrell, 66, of rural Cooper, Iowa will be 2:30 pm Thursday, December 4, 2008 at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson.  Visitation will be after 9:00 am Thursday, December 4, 2008 at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson with the family present to greet friends from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm prior to the service.  Interment will be in the Jefferson Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Cooper United Methodist Church, P.A.W.S. Animal Rescue and Super Cooper.

Darrell Francis Scheuermann was born September 3, 1942, at the Greene County Hospital in Jefferson, Iowa, the son of Roy and Wilma (Hollar) Scheuermann. Darrell attended Franklin Township School in Cooper, Iowa, from kindergarten through his junior year of high school. He graduated in 1960 from Jefferson Community High School. During his school years, he played saxophone in the band, winning many awards at competitions. He participated in school plays and speech as well as 4-H where he showed hogs, cattle, and sheep. Later he would go on to become a 4-H leader. Darrell played basketball, baseball, and ran track and possessed a love of sports his entire life. In his young adult years, he organized and played on the Cooper town softball team. Upon graduating from high school, he attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa, for two years. He was drafted into the United States Army and served as company clerk typist. After his honorable discharge, he returned to rural Cooper to help with the family farm.

On June 21, 1969, Darrell married Martha Trask at Renwick Baptist Church in Renwick, Iowa. They began their married life on a farm north of Bagley, Iowa and moved to his parents’ home place in 1981. Darrell enjoyed traveling with Martha whether it was going to visit their children and grandchildren, the girls’ state basketball tournaments every year, trips to Branson, Missouri or their recent Alaskan cruise.

Darrell was a devoted farmer with a great love for the land and his livestock, especially his Charlois cattle. He also raised purebred Alaskan Malamute dogs and later, American Eskimo dogs. He liked meeting people throughout the Midwest selling puppies. Darrell enjoyed many outdoor activities with his family such as fishing, hunting, picnics with bonfires, mushroom hunting and going on rides to explore the countryside and take in all of God’s nature. Darrell was known as a good cook throughout the Cooper community and he was always looking for new recipes to try. He was a devoted member of Cooper United Methodist Church, serving in many leadership capacities and he was also an active member of the Super Cooper Committee.

Darrell died December 1, 2008, at home in rural Cooper. He was preceded in death by his parents; Roy in 1999 and Wilma in 2008. Survivors include his wife Martha and two children, Dr. Troy (Ralinda) Scheuermann of Keosauqua, Iowa and the Rev. Traci (the Rev. Willem) Houts of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and three granddaughters Taryn and Kaitlyn Scheuermann and Grace Houts; two sisters Donna Rae Scheuermann of New Hope Village in Carroll, Iowa and Linda (Richard) Schaffer of Parkers Prairie, Minnesota; brothers-in-law Harold (Patricia) Trask of Renwick, Iowa and Dr. David Trask of Mission Viejo, California; one dear aunt Elsie Hutchison of Jefferson; many other relatives and close friends.

Memorials may be directed to Cooper United Methodist Church, P.A.W.S. Animal Rescue of Greene County or Super Cooper Committee. Services are being handled by Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home of Jefferson, Iowa. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Thursday, December 4 beginning at 9:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The family will be present from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. to receive friends. The funeral service will begin at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home at 2:30 p.m. followed by interment at Jefferson Cemetery with a meal to follow at Cooper United Methodist Church.
