Doug Wessling
William Douglas Wessling (better known as Doug) was born April 3, 1916 at Grand Junction, Iowa, the son of Clarence and Sadie (Blanshan) Wessling. Doug attended school in Grand Junction. He graduated in 1935 and started farming, working with his mother, as his father passed away in the preceding March. Doug was married to Nadyne Culley on January 1, 1938. They were the parents of LeRoy, Roger, Ivan, and Jane. Doug enjoyed working with livestock, and helping and encouraging the children with their 4-H projects when needed. Doug served on the Farm Bureau board, beef and pork produces, and the Iowa Farm Business Association. He was a 4-H leader and DeMolay Dad. Doug belonged to the Grand Junction Baptist Church until it closed. Then he and Nadyne joined the Methodist Church in Grand Junction. He served on several church boards. He belonged to the Masons, Shrine, and Lions Club. He enjoyed helping with the Lions Club tree park. In later years, Doug enjoyed playing golf and the friendships it afforded. Doug Wessling died March 29, 2008 at the Regency Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Jefferson. He was 91 years of age. Preceding him in death were his parents Clarence and Sadie Wessling; a sister, Ione McHugh and brother-in-law Jim McHugh; his wife Nadyne Wessling; and son Ivan Wessling. Survivors include two sons: LeRoy and his wife Sandra of Urbandale, IA; and Roger and his wife Judy of Grand Junction, IA; daughter-in-law Marleen of Urbandale, IA; and one daughter Jane Higgins and husband Gary of Grand Junction, IA; eight grandchildren: Brenda Onken and husband Dewey, Becci Hamilton and husband Bob, Bruce Wessling and wife Jenny, Jeff Wessling, Christine Wessling, Scott Wessling and wife Heather, Michelle Higgins-McGuire and husband Mike, and Ryan Higgins and wife Dawn; sixteen great-grandchildren: other relatives and friends. |
