Funeral services for Farrell Maurice Sullivan, 84, of Jefferson, IA, will be 10:30am Saturday, June 21, 2008 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Jefferson. Interment will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Jefferson.

Friends may call at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson after noon, Friday. There will be a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. Friday at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home, Jefferson and the family will be present to greet friends following the Vigil Service until 9:00 p.m.

Farrell Maurice Sullivan, born June 9, 1924 in Panama, Iowa. Son of John Eugene and Pauline Elizabeth Von Tersch Sullivan. He spent his early years in Panama and in 1942 his family moved to Jefferson, Iowa where Farrell graduated in 1942. Previous to this he had worked on the family farm and he joined the service in 1942. Farrell was an ammunition bearer: He carried ammunition for 60mm mortars. Helped set-up mortars, maintained weapons and the area. He disassembled and reassembled weapons operated in training and combat. He was also a messenger: carried messages from squad leader to platoon leader in training and combat. Carried carbine operated portable voice radio in training and operated signal lamps.

He was wounded by shrapnel in the head, neck and right leg in the Normandy invasion during WWII. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for “meritorious achievement and exemplary conduct in ground combat against the enemy army.” He received an honorable discharge May 30, 1945.

He was employed by Peterson Oil Company, Howard Theater, and Coast to Coast Hardware until retirement in 1990. He spent his retirement years at home in Jefferson and in Bella Vista, Arkansas.

Farrell and Luerettia were married June 12, 1945 in Mercer, Missouri. They are parents to three children and are members of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Farrell passed away June 18, 2008 at the Villa Care Center in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Preceding him in death were his parents, three brothers, Phil, Jimmy, Charles, and his sister Rosemary. Survivors include his wife Laurettia of Jefferson, IA; two daughters: Eleanor and husband David Molle of Kingsley, Iowa, and Connie Fagen of Jefferson, IA; and son Gene Sullivan of Sioux City, IA; one sister: Elaine Wiggins of Jefferson, IA; 3 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
