Funeral services for Merritt E. Duncan, 82, of Jefferson will be 2:00pm Wednesday July 2, 2008 at First United Methodist Church in Jefferson. Interment will be in the Jefferson Cemetery.
Friends may call at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson after 12 noon Tuesday. There will be an Elks Service at 7:00pm Tuesday at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home, followed by visitation with the family until 8:30pm.
Merritt E. Duncan, son of Dewey D. Duncan and Ada Wright Duncan was born October 19, 1925 in Greenbrier Township, Greene County, Iowa. He attended country school there and
gradated from the Bayard High School in 1943.
On December 12, 1946 he married Bonnie Joan Owens at the Methodist Church in Hiawatha, Kansas. Merritt began farming south of Jefferson for 2 years and then at Scranton for 10 years and then back to Greenbrier. In 1975 the family moved into Jefferson and he continued to farm until 2005. He also worked for State Farm Insurance as a crop hail adjuster for 21 years.
Merritt enjoyed restoring John Deere tractors and going on the WHO Tractor Ride several times. He also loved to play pool and won the Iowa Elks Nine Ball Tournament. He also loved to go to coffee with his friends.
Merritt was a member of the Greenbrier Methodist Church and had served on the church board and as a Sunday school teacher. He was a charter member of the Jefferson Elks Club, a founder of New Hope Village and member of their Board of Directors, a 4-H Leader, and a member of the Antique Tractors Club.
Merritt E. Duncan passed away at the Greene County Medical Center on June 30, 2008 at the age of 82 years. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; sons, Thomas Merritt and Jay Richard; a brother, William Duncan and his wife Donna; also several brothers-in-law and sisters-in- law. Merritt was preceded in death by an infant son, Robert William; his parents; and a brother Duane and his wife Doris.
