Memorial Services for Virginia, 88, of Jefferson will be 3:00 pm Monday, December 1, 2008 at the First Baptist Church in Jefferson.  A private family burial will be held at the Jefferson Cemetery, Jefferson, Iowa.

Virginia Harmer, of Jefferson, daughter of Roy and Bess Pine, was born May 29, 1920 in Exira Iowa.  She died November 26, 2008 at the Greene County Medical Center. 

Virginia grew up on her parent’s farm near Exira and attended the Exira schools.  In 1938, she went to Glenwood, Iowa and worked at the School for the Handicapped.  While working in Glenwood, she met Merritt Harmer of Pacific Junction, Iowa.  The two were married on January 3, 1942. 

In 1951, Merritt, Virginia and son Jack moved to Jefferson and another son Judd soon joined them. 

Virginia was a member of the Jefferson Baptist Church.  She enjoyed the outdoors, golfing and fishing.  She loved to play cards and belonged to many bridge clubs throughout the years.  She and Merritt enjoyed playing cards and taking trips to Tama and Council Bluffs with their many friends and neighbors. 

Virginia was a long-time volunteer "pink lady" with the GCMC Hospital Auxiliary.  She enjoyed her weekly visits delivering mail and flowers to patients and working in the gift shop. 

She was a great mother and grandma, she loved cooking and baking for her family, she enjoyed watching and feeding the birds outside of her window, working the morning puzzle in the paper and an occasional jigsaw puzzle.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Harold and Marion Pine; two sisters, Rose (Harold) Wilson and Melva (Lee) Hirth, and her youngest son, Judd Harmer, in 2006.

Survivors include her husband, Merritt Harmer, son, Jack Harmer and grandson, Scott Harmer, all of Jefferson; a granddaughter, Angela Harmer of Des Moines;  a sister Evelyn (Larry) Miller and a brother, J.R. (Bob) Pine both of Denver, CO; daughters-in-law, Chris Henning and Linda White, also many nieces and nephews. 

Memorials are suggested to the Greene County Medical Center Auxiliary fund.
