Doris Arlene Holmes Clark, daughter of Ralph and May Robinson Holmes, passed away at the Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids, Iowa on November 15, 2009.

Doris, born in 1919, celebrated her 90th birthday, August 8, 2009. She grew up in the rural Bagley and Yale area, graduating high school at Bagley with the Class of 1936. Her parents moved back to rural Panora and Doris rented a room, in a Bagley home, so she could finish high school at Bagley. After graduation, Doris worked for Dr. Brown in Panora.

On February 6, 1938, Doris was united in marriage to Doris (Dory) Darwin Clark. They became the parents of a son, Jerry, born August 3, 1942 and a few years later, two grandsons came along to spoil. Doris and Dory farmed their entire married life together, in Dodge Township, with dairy cattle, horses, sheep, hogs, chickens, ducks, goats, numerous cats and always a family dog to care for as well as their field crops. Doris loved the farm animals and so enjoyed caring for them. New soft fluffy yellow chickens were a delight to share with the boys and family and friends enjoyed her fresh delicious fried chicken. Fresh cream from the milking chores ended up in many recipes. Sour cream raisin pie, a specialty, ended up at many a community bake sale and often didn’t make it to the bake sale table as an avid fan picked it up at her house so he didn’t miss getting it. Canning vegetables from her garden, large strawberry bed and fruit trees kept the cupboard shelves stocked. Doris cooked many wonderful meals for corn shellers, hay balers and other farm laborers. Always homemade and fresh from the farm. Visiting nieces and nephews were always very special to her and their was always plenty to keep them busy and always yummy homemade fudge and caramels at Christmas time for gifts to family and friends.

Doris was a member of the Bagley Methodist Church, Bagley United Methodist Women, Bagley home culture club, country club and Eastern Star. She was active in many community activities, teaching Sunday school and helping with the 4-H program. Planning and serving many funeral dinners at her church and many church dinners and suppers. Always helping wherever needed.

Dory passed away in 1974 and Doris moved to town in the 1980’s. She worked at the Conservation Center at Springbrook State Park for several years. Doing what she enjoyed most, cooking for many youth and adult groups.

Five great-grand children were a joy to her. Taking them to the Bagley library, plenty of cookies, and just plain grandma loving going on.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents and husband Dory. She is survived by her son Jerry, daughter-in-law Terry, grandsons Scott (Alisa), Jack (Jill), Great grand-children Shae Sibley (Jon), Collin, Caelin, Gabrielle and Spencer and one Great Great granddaughter Berlin Grace. Brothers Vernon Holmes of Panora, Harold Holmes of Boone and sister-in-law Betty Holmes of Boone, nieces, nephews and many other relatives and many friends.
