Darwin served in the United States Army from 1951 – 1953. He then worked for a dairy in Perry, and at a feed mill. In 1955 he joined his father-in-law, Ralph Cox, at the Gambles Store in Grand Junction. In 1972 they incorporated to Cox and Scheuermann with his wife Rosie and son, Kim. The Gambles Store continued until 1978. In 1978, Darwin began working at the Greene County Medical Center in the engineering Department until his retirement in 1992. He was a volunteer fireman on the Grand Junction Fire Department from November 1964 – March 1970. Dar was the Scout Leader for Troop 37 in Grand Junction from 1969 to 1973.
