Memorial Services for Earl Smith, 71, of Jefferson will be 2:00 pm Monday, March 23, 2009 at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson. Interment will be in the Paton Township Cemetery in Paton.

Earl Earnest “Smokie” Smith, son of Everett Smith and Sylvia (Hegwood) Smith, was born June 24, 1937 at Winterset, Iowa.  Earl worked most of his adult life on the farm for June Browning and Vernon Hamilton.  He enjoyed working with the sheep and goats.  He liked helping Vernon Hamilton and his family, LesLa, Eugenia and Dana, show sheep at the many livestock shows. 

Earl lived at Adams Court in Jefferson for a few months.  He died March 16, 2009 at Regency Park Nursing and Rehab Center in Jefferson.  He was 71 years of age.   Preceding him in death were his parents and grandparents, step-father Ernest Balius, Aunt Goldie Hegwood, Uncle Harold Hegwood and Uncle Kenneth Hegwood. 

Survivors include his sisters, Darlene Smith, Carolyn (Balius) Staley, Joyce (Balius) Brown, Beverly (Balius) Molloy; aunts Ruby Smith, Betty Mull, Janet Hegwood and Kathryn Hegwood; the Vernon Hamilton family; cousins and friends.
