Funeral Services for Isabel Smith, 96, of Ames, formerly of Grand Junction will be 10:00 am Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Grand Junction. Interment will be in the Jefferson Cemetery. Visitation will be after 10:00 am Thursday at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church in Grand Junction or the Ames Christian School.

Isabel was born on a farm near Rippey, Iowa on November 14, 1912, to George and Lois Podmore. She was the oldest of three daughters. She attended Rippey School until her sophomore year. Her parents then moved to a farm on the northwest edge of Dana, where her father owned and operated a dairy farm for 12 years. After graduating from Dana in 1931, she attended St. Anthony’s School of Nursing in Carroll, Iowa, where she received her nursing degree in 1934. Isabel worked at the Greene County Hospital, in private practice, and then became the school nurse for East Greene Community Schools. After retirement she served on the Greene County Hospice and Respite Committee, was a member of the Bereavement Support Group Advisory Committee, and was chairman of Grand Junction Meals on Wheels. She received the Iowa Methodist Success After Sixty Award in 1991 for these efforts. She loved to help and serve her family and community.

Isabel married Raymond “Jiggs” Smith on July 16, 1936, a union that lasted 50 years. Jiggs was a barber in Grand Junction. Left to cherish her memory are her two sons: Michael (Terry), of Stoughton, Mass., and Mac (Peggy) of Huxley, Iowa; two sisters: Marion Dommel of Hopkins, Minn., and Irene Eilbert of Mankato, Minn; five grandchildren: Charlotte Mastropasqua of Portland, Maine; Elizabeth Ostergaard (Peter) of Vedeak, Denmark; Kent (Madelaine) Smith of Des Moines, Iowa; Lindsay (Kyle) Mann of West Des Moines, Iowa; Kelsey (Austin) Williamson of Iowa City, Iowa; six step-grandchildren: Jennifer (Greg) O’Neill of North Kingston, R.I.; Kelly (Steve) De Angelis of Sommerville, Mass.; Jessica Roberts of Webster, Mass.; Kerri Roberts of Yarmouth, Maine; Izaiah Roberts of Stoughton, Mass.; and Julie Roberts of Stoughton, Mass.; eight great-grandchildren; four step-great grandchildren; and many nieces; nephews; and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jiggs.

Memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church or Ames Christian School.
