A graveside memorial service for Norman “Joe” Potter will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 5, 2009 at the Jefferson Cemetery, Jefferson, Iowa.   Bob McKnight, minister of First Baptist Church in Jefferson will officiate.  Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home of Jefferson is in charge of arrangements. 

Norman Joseph Potter was born May 20, 1932 in Jefferson, Iowa.  He was the son of Roy Allen Potter and Ferne Brannen Potter.  Joe was raised in Jefferson, where he played football for the Jefferson Rams.

Following his graduation from Jefferson High School in 1950, Joe began working for the State Highway Commission as a surveyor.  He was married to Rebecca Clark in a ceremony at his parent’s home in Jefferson.  Joe and Rebecca had five children.  In 1964, they divorced.

Joe lived in the Jefferson area for most of his life.  He enjoyed sports, and was a fan of the Chicago Bears and the Iowa Hawkeyes.  Recently he lived at Abbington on Grand in Ames.  There he died September 30, 2009 at the age of 77 years. 

Preceding him in death were his parents, and a son, Stanley.  Surviving are four children: Kathy Kaufman and her husband Robert of Cedar Rapids, IA; David Potter and his wife Cheryl of San Bernardino, CA; Kelly Trumpold and her husband Bruce of Middle Amana, IA and Brian Potter of Glendora, CA; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
