Ferne Hoyt was born on a farm east of Redfield, Iowa on September 12, 1913.  She was the second child of the late Chester and Macel Nolte.  Her older brother was Mervyn Nolte and her younger brothers included Glen and Clark Nolte.  Fifteen years after Clark was born a new addition was added to round out the family, Sidney Nolte.  Ferne loved and cared for Sid as if her own.

She graduated from Bagley High School in 1931.  She attended Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, Iowa and obtained her teaching certificate.   She taught in rural one room schools near Guthrie Center and in Greenbrier Township until 1936.

Ferne met Raymond Hoyt in High School and they were married on December 30, 1935.  There were three children born into this family;  Joseph Harris, Ronald Raymond and Vicki Sue.

Ferne returned to teaching in the Bagley school system when Vicki was in kindergarten in 1954.  She retired from the YJB school system in 1975.  One major accomplishment during Ferne’s life was to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree from Drake University at the age of 56.

She took great pride in her flower garden.  She was a member of the Bagley Garden Club for many years.  She also enjoyed her vegetable garden and she shared her abundant crops with family and friends.

She enjoyed cooking, crocheting, knitting, sewing and making quilts for family members.  She also discovered another talent near retirement of painting and shared many of her beautiful paintings with family and friends.

Ferne and Ray enjoyed their many friends over the years. They spend hours playing cards, gathering on the 4th of July, playing croquet and sharing their cabin on Spirit Lake which produced wonderful life long memories for many generations.

Ferne passed away on August 5, 2010.  She is survived by her daughter, Vicki Gubser and husband Bob, Lake Panorama, a brother, Sidney Nolte and his wife, Ginny, Plano, TX, a daughter-in-law, Barbara Hoyt of Branson, MO, 9 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren.
