Funeral Services for Jean Davis, 85, of Jefferson will be 11:00 am Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at the First Baptist Church in Jefferson, IA. Interment will be in the Jefferson Cemetery, Jefferson, IA. Visitation will be after 1:00 pm Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson with the family present to greet friends from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association and may be left at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home.
Jean Davis was born in Carroll County, Iowa, to Jack and Mildred Cook Calder on August 9, 1924. She was the youngest of eight children. She grew up in the Greene County area attending rural schools and the Jefferson grade school, graduating from Jefferson High School in 1943. Later she graduated from Drake University in Des Moines and taught school for 28 ½ years all in Greene County.
She first taught a school in Jackson Township from 1945 to 1946. Next she taught in Farlin from 1946 to 1947. Her daughter Carol was born in 1950 and Jean did not teach again until 1959 when she taught at Cooper for one year. In 1963 she began teaching at Paton where she taught until she retired in 1984.
Jean was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Jefferson, the Greene-Carroll County Retired Teachers Unit, Friendly Club, a member of the Historical Society and for several years was on the central committee of the Greene County Democrats. After retiring she was active in the Hospice Respite program and several other volunteer groups.
On September 17, 1947, Jean was united in marriage to Leo Davis at Oskaloosa, Iowa. They were the parents of one daughter Carol of Bellevue, Nebraska. They farmed in Bristol Township for 40 years.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers and 3 sisters. She is survived by her husband Leo (Swede) Davis of Jefferson, IA; her daughter Carol and her husband Ruben Bera of Bellevue, NE, two grandchildren Wendy and her husband Wayne Blackwell of Denison, TX and Shaun Ruth and his wife Amanda of Bellevue, NE; six great grandchildren, Hannah, Elizabeth and Annabeth Blackwell and Hannah, Jordan and Eli Ruth; one sister Arlene Black of Colorado; sisters-in-law Betty Barrow of Jefferson, IA and Vivian Adams of Minnesota; brother-in-law Dean Davis of Glidden, IA; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
