Funeral services for Lois Graven, 90, of Jefferson, will be 10:30am Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at First United Methodist Church, Jefferson. Interment will be in the Franklin Twp. Cemetery. Friends may call at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson after 10:30am Monday, where the family will greet friends from 5:00 – 7:00pm Monday.
Lois Lorene Lawton, daughter of Harvey and Nellie Stephenson Lawton, was born March 31, 1922, in Franklin Township. She spent most of her childhood there and attended school in Cooper where she graduated with the Class of 1940. She went on to attend Iowa State University where she earned a degree in Home Economics and Child Development. She was united in marriage to Jim Graven on September 1, 1946 at the United Methodist Church in Jefferson. They became the parents of three children, Randy, Sherrinell, and Dennis.
Following her marriage, Lois taught in the Bagley and Cooper School Districts. She will be remembered for her many years as a substitute teacher and her service to 4-H and youth activities. In 2009, Lois was honored by being inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame. She was a longtime State Fair Judge and served on the 4-H and Youth committee at both the local and state levels. She was a faithful member of many organizations, including Eastern Star, Federated Clubs, and PEO, Chapter CZ. Lois was a loyal bridge player, belonging to many clubs. She also enjoyed her Friday night and birthday groups. Lois served as a board member of Iowa Children and Family Services, and was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Jefferson and the UMW. She passed away Wednesday, January 30, at the Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson at the age of 90, following a brief illness.
Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Graven, her parents, Harvey and Nellie Stephenson Lawton, a brother, Gerald Lawton, and an infant, twin brother, Louis. She is survived by her three children Randy (Judi Butterfield) Graven, Sherrinell (Glenn) Childs, and Dennis Graven, all of Jefferson. Also surviving is her sister-in-law Dot Lawton of Jefferson, three grandchildren, Jacki (Tom) Campbell, Shannon (Rodney) Stephenson, Brandon Childs, and great grandchildren Jacob, Jonathon and James Stephenson and many other relatives and friends.
Memorials are suggested to Iowa Children and Family Services, Diabetes Association, or the Jefferson Public Library.
