Rita Rose Gruber Deardorff was born December 16, 1931 in Coon Rapids, Iowa to Joseph and Myrtle Halsell Gruber. Rita passed away May 26, 2013 at the Lutheran Home in Perry, Iowa at the age of 81 years.
Rita grew up in Coon Rapids, Iowa, attending grade school, then St. Angela Academy in Carroll, Iowa to begin her high school years. She returned to Coon Rapids, Iowa as a junior in high school. In September of 1947, she went to a dance in Bayard, Iowa with friends. She crossed the street to use the restroom and met the love of her life, Orville Deardorff. On Friday the 13th of January, 1948 they were married in the Annunciation Church Rectory in Coon Rapids, Iowa. They enjoyed many fun times on a Harley Davidson motorcycle before the kids came. To this union 4 children were born, Mike 1949, Mickey 1950, Cindy 1953, and Chris 1956.
Rita was a homemaker while the kids were small. She did her morning household chores and would find time to have coffee with friends before starting dinner. After the kids were all in school, she went to work at Continental Grain in Herndon, Iowa, where she joined her husband as office manager. They worked together for 25 years until they retired in 1991.
After retirement, a neighbor taught Rita to crochet. She kept herself busy making afghans and quilts. She gave all of her handiwork away. Family, friends, blood donors, and nurses, all the YJB and Bayard blood drives enjoyed the best from her hands. The quilts she took to the homeless shelters in Des Moines.
She was a perfectionist at everything she did and cooking was no exception. Her baked goods, especially pies, were a work of art. She will be remembered for her beef and noodles and potato salad, never to be duplicated.
Rita was a special lady, loving, caring and feisty. You never wondered about her thoughts, she would tell you. Orville and Rita celebrated 65 wonderful years together. She was loved by all and will be missed.
